I arrived early for a showing of Longlegs at Cinema Village on E12th so had to have a wander…luckily Ione of my 2 favourite book stores in New York is nearby, Strand Books. My other one is McNally Jackson on Prince Street.
We all know you can happen upon a book for no other reason then it’s cover, even ones that you don’t particularly like, however it had the sticker ‘New York Times Bestseller’ which can make up for a cover so I picked it up.
I had the pleasure of thinking it was fiction, I love when this happens with a try story. I googled one of the pictures the book mentions and it referenced it’s theft by Stéphane Breitwieser, the main character of the book.
So a quarter in I find it’s true and all makes the book even more exciting and the thefts in it all the more audacious. The book is about how this guy, abetted by his girlfriend, blind-eyed by his mother, stole nearly 2 billion dollars (may euros!?) worth of art over 8 years that they kept in their attic bedroom of his mum’s house!
I read it over 2 days, unusually for me as I tend to take my time but It was so well written and bounced along with the fun and excitement a good leisure read can. What these two get up to in the museums of Europe across France, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland is just fantastic, mad, daring, and exciting with a massive helping of frivillous risk!
I throughly recommend getting on board and giving it a read.
Longlegs is a good jaunt too. Full of holes. Full of problems.
Nick Cage is amazing tho and so is Maika Monroe.
And it’s well creepy!
