“Armageddon breakup”
We all know them eh? For that term alone I think this album is worth a listen. It was released in 2007 and took me 17 years to hear it.
I found out about via the Discogs valentines newsletter with the of course we’re going to open it subject line of “Essential Love Songs & Heartbreak Album”. They do lists so well on Discogs but on the eve of Valentine’s Day 2023 who could resist the ’16 OF THE MOST HEARTBREAKING ALBUMS OF ALL TIME’ blog post.
Of course Blood on the Tracks was there, of course Taylor Swifts magical Folklore was there, along with lots of what you’d hope to see but the addition of the album ‘Summary’ by Barr was a new one. And oh what a new one it is, I had never heard of Barr before.
According to Wikipedia:
“Brendan Fowler is a Los Angeles-based musician and multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography, sculpture, and performance. He first became known for his music performances and records released under the name of BARR.”
The album is like Eminem’s Stan and The Streets’ Mike Skinner got together and had a break-up love child. The album is short, any longer and you’d be walking into the sea (or whatever metaphorical choice of breakup misery you prefer).
I’d love to say this album is on vinyl but I can’t find it anywhere so it’s a CD, Spotify or Apple Music stream or purchase.
He refers to Texas Skate Rock as the genre but I don’t know what it is.
What I do know is that I love it.
Favourite lyrics, songs etc:
Complete Consumption Of Us Both:
“I can’t believe this is actually happening”
“I can’t believe this is–I cannot believe this is actually happening”
“I can’t believe this is actually happening”
Then soon you’re on the floor sobbing, being screamed at
To just “fuck you and then get out”
Complete Consumption Of Us Both:
What the fuck did you think then about everything?
We couldn’t talk before but at least then I could try to read you
But now there’s nothing, complete nothing but rumors and hearsay and the small kernels that can be gleaned from fucking whatever, asking qu–augghhhh…
And that manifests into a nervous work in present, like
How about you get your own shelves for your own house and I’ll get mine and I won’t come to your dinner party; I’ll buy my shelves during your dinner party
